چکیده

Solvation and rotational dynamics of 4-aminophthalimide (4AP) in four ionic liquids (ILs) are measured using a combination of fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy and time-correlated single photon counting. These data are compared with previously reported data for coumarin 153 (C153) to investigate the probe dependence of solvation dynamics. No fast component (<15 ps) in the fluorescence anisotropy is observed with 4AP. The differences between the solvation response functions of 4AP and C153 are significant in all four ILs, but these differences can be reduced by applying a correction for solute rotation using measured emission anisotropies. Response functions of other probes available in the literature are used to further examine the validity of this correction. The corrected data are also compared to predictions of dielectric continuum models of solvation. By replacing the measured static conductivity of the ILs with an estimated value, such predictions show good agreement with the observed spectral response functions, especially when the anion size is small.

Solvation dynamics in imidazolium and phosphonium ionic liquids: Effects of solute motion

Experimental and simulation results of solvation dynamics in ionic liquids have so far been explained in terms of translational motion of the ions constituting the ionic liquids under investigation. A recent theoretical study [Kashyap & Biswas, J Phys Chem B, 114 (2010) 254] has indicated that while translational motion of the constituent ions is indeed responsible for Stokes’ shift dynamics of...

Fluorescence probing of temperature-dependent dynamics and friction in ionic liquid local environments.

The solvation dynamics and local orientational friction for a series of four ionic liquids have been probed using coumarin 153 (C153) as a function of temperature. These ionic liquids are comprised of nonaromatic organic cations paired with a common anion, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (NTf(2)-). The specific liquids are as follows: N-methyl-tri-N-butylammonium NTf(2)- (N(1444)+/NTf(2)-), N...

Effect of room temperature ionic liquids on femtosecond solvation dynamics in a triblock copolymer (P123) gel

Effect of two room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL, [pmim][Br] and [pmim][BF4]) on the solvation dynamics and anisotropy decay of coumarin 480 (C480) in P123 gel has been studied using femtosecond up-conversion. In P123 gel, C480 displays a significant excitation wavelength dependence of emission maximum (red edge excitation shift, REES of 18 nm) and solvation dynamics, which suggest heterogene...

High-pressure study of solvation properties of room-temperature ionic liquids

The solvation properties of some room-temperature ionic liquids consisting of imidazolium cations and various anions were examined by means of the high-pressure spectroscopy with solvatochromic probes. We measured the pressure dependence of KamletTaft solvatochromic parameters (π∗, β) and microviscosity (η). It was found that π∗ and β were not so sensitive to the types of imidazolium cations an...
